About Shot By Kern 1: The First Season
Photographer, music video producer (Sonic Youth, Marilyn Manson, among others) and underground filmmaker ('cinema of transgression') Richard Kern has been focused on shooting natural beauties ever since the early 90s. During a shoot, he loves to talk to his models about sensitive topics like sex and violence. Often the girls will tell him about their dreams, desires and relationships. One of the few famous faces among Kern's models was Sasha Grey, who stepped in front of his lens when she was just starting out as a porn performer. For some time now, a Vice magazine camera crew has been following Kern around, filming his famous sessions. This is how the first season of SHOT BY KERN came about. Naturally, there is lots of nudity in this movie too because Kern's models often shed their clothes.

Like Helmut Newton and Terry Richardson, Richard Kern manages to walk the fine line between the hight art of nude photography and pornographic sleaze without ever becoming cheap or crass like so many other photographers. Even a wildcat like Sasha Grey ends up looking like a girl-next-door type when capture by Kern's lens. Although Richard Kern's shoots never drift off into obscenity, the results are nevertheless quite lascivious, sometimes even vulgar. Naturally, this effect is created solely in the viewer's mind. It's not as if Kern wanted us to think in those terms about the girls. Or does he?
